Gum treatments
Generally to make a good evaluation, one or more x-rays are required, thereafter a series of treatments will be recommended. Generally as a first step a curettage of the affected areas will be done followed by a 2 month recall evocation.
Curettage
Curettage is the initial treatment of the gums under local anaesthesia. Treatment includes a deep cleaning to eliminate tarter on the root surface and below the gum. The aim is to remove local irritants as well as bacteria below the gum and in so doing reduce the periodontal pocket.
If the bone is significantly lost a periodontal surgery or correction may be proposed.
The gum is repositioned at the bone level . The aim is to reduce the pockets to a normal/ideal level of 3 mm. This is to facilitate and maintain good oral hygiene. A re-evaluation is done after a 2 month healing period.
Good oral hygiene is required before any surgical phase.
periowave
This concept involves the injection of an ink at the base of the periodontal pocket. The laser then destroys the bacteria at the base of the pocket. The treatment is painless and requires no anaesthesia. This treatment should be repeated according to the patients needs. The frequency will depend on the stage of the periodontal disease and/or the specific periodontal problem.
Osteotomy and/or osteoplasty
Osteotomy is a term used to indicate an osseous correction of a region, generally 3 teeth or more. The aim is to eliminate or reduce the periodontal pockets and promote healing. This procedure is often done in conjunction with an osteoplasty or remodeling of the bone architecture to favor the elimination of residual pockets. This procedure is often a pre-requisite before doing crown and bridges.
Each case is different a good evaluation is required.
